Stunned city is finally beginning to recover after chaos on streets

ON Monday night I reached Liverpool’s Water Street just after police taped it off as paramedics scrambled to rush victims to hospital.

The city centre was in chaos as tearful Liverpool fans stood around in shock at seeing the horror of the Ford Galaxy car ploughing into celebrating supporters.

Rain was pounding the pavements, the darkening night lit by rows of flashing blue lights as emergency vehicles raced to and from the scene. A fan in a red Liverpool shirt filming the scenes said: "I just ran away. What's happening?"

On Tuesday the car involved was still on Water Street, hidden under a giant inflatable blue forensic tent, as Home Secretary Yvette Cooper surveyed the scene.

But yesterday morning the cordons had gone and some normality had returned.
