THE number of criminals receiving a “slap on the wrist” due to the Scottish Government's controversial approach to law and order has reached a 10-year high, figures show.

- By Richard Elias

According to the latest statistics, 3,600 offenders were given support to address the causes of their offending instead of being prosecuted.

New data from the Scottish Government shows there were 3,600 such cases in 2024/25.

That, according to the Scottish Government, was an increase of 7% from the previous year’s total of 3,400, and the highest level in a decade. The “diversion from prosecution” allows prosecutors to refer cases to local authorities or other agencies, to tackle the cause instead of hauling offenders through the courts. Causes can range from drug or alcohol problems to homelessness and mental health struggles.
