Deal means World to revamped Crucible

- BY MARK WHILEY

SHEFFIELD'S GLORY BAIZE

BARRY HEARN admitted he would have “hated himself” if the World Snooker Championship had left the Crucible after a new deal to keep the tournament at the Sheffield arena until at least 2045 was agreed.

There is an option to extend the arrangement for a further five years, with the iconic theatre undergoing a £45 million revamp.

The venues existing contract with the World Snooker Tour (WST) was due to expire after the 2027 tournament, but it will now continue to be staged in its current format until after the 2028 edition.

The event will temporarily move out for at least one year during the renovations, which will add an extra 500 seats, taking the capacity to just under 1,500.
