Rail stations demand for 'neglected' North East

THE Scottish Government has been accused of “neglecting” the North East after figures revealed a staggering 150% increase in rail journeys near two abandoned train stations.
Ministers face intense pressure to reopen Cove and Newtonhill railway stations, which were shuttered in 1956, after new data from ScotRail exposed a massive boom in passenger demand.
The Freedom of Information stats were revealed by the Scottish Tories, showing journeys from Portlethen station, which is situated less than five miles away from both Cove and Newtonhill, rose from 27,136 in 2022 to a massive 67,540 in 2025.
