Politicians must beware power of the pensioner

SPRING sunshine must not blind us to the reality that pensioners across Britain are worried about the winter. OAPs face a miserable life if solely reliant on the state pension. More than eight in 10 over-65s say they could not afford utilities and food if their only income was £230.15 a week.

As the charity Independent Age has warned, older people describe life on a low income as “limiting”, “joyless” and “like another lockdown”.

A multitude of worries and expenses come with ageing. People should not also face anxiety about staying warm.
