Police in Scotland finally get body-worn cameras

THE rollout of body-worn video cameras for Police Scotland officers finally got under way in Dundee yesterday.

The force is the second largest in the UK after the Met but is the only one not to have the kit as standard equipment.

Last year, Scots Tory leader Russell Findlay said the old Grampian Police had first trialled body-worn video in 2012 and described the delays as “unacceptable.”

"It's been a delay of more than 10 years," he told MSPs last September. “We're the only police force in the UK without them.”

Around 750 officers covering Dundee, Angus and Perthshire will be fitted with the new devices over the coming weeks in the first stage of the national rollout.

More than 10,500 Motorola Solutions VB400 cameras will be issued to frontline officers and police custody staff across the country as the rollout continues, as part of a £13.3million contract.
