YOU may not be aware of this — it certainly came as a big shock to me — but apparently the UK hasn’t had a new castle built for 100 years. Yes, a whole century. Extraordinary, eh?

It’s almost as through we've felt we don’t need that sort of building any more, that castles no longer serve any real purpose in the modern age, especially the kind that need to be surrounded by a moat and defended by chaps in chain mail with bows and arrows.

How arrogant we can be at times, dismissing our heritage with such nonchalance and complacency. I guess that’s so-called “progress” for you.
