Middle-income Scots targeted in tax raid

2021 Holyrood manifesto. A report, commissioned by the Scottish Government — at a cost of £1.3million — claims this could be achieved by increasing taxes and specifically targeting middle-class Scots.

This would allow those already on benefits to receive even more free money despite the already-generous social security system in Scotland.

Salaries

Critics have previously labelled the plan “bizarre and unaffordable”. The proposals have been put forward by the Minimum Income Guarantee Group.

Among their ideas is the personal allowance for Scottish income tax lowered to £7,570 - a move which would come at a cost to the public of about £2.68bn.

People living in the most-expensive homes would be forced to pay up to 22.5% council tax more above inflation. Another idea is to tax income at 42p in the pound for salaries over £40,000 and applying Scottish income tax to dividends and savings.
