EDDY Shah was a businessman and maverick press magnate who shook up the UK newspaper industry and took on the unions long before Rupert Murdoch did.

Shah founded the technologically advanced Today newspaper in 1986 and owned the short-lived tabloid The Post and the Messenger Group.
Born Selim Jehan Shah in Cambridge, his mother was English, from a boat-building family, and his Iranian father was a shipping barrister. He was educated at Karachi Grammar School, the Scottish boarding school Gordonstoun, and at both Haywards Heath Grammar School and Haywards Heath Secondary Modern School in Sussex.
