THE honeymoon for England manager Thomas Tuchel feels well and truly over.

- By John Cross in Barcelona

He has overseen three wins, six goals scored, none conceded and yet this was such a familiar - and dull - story in a 1-0 win over Andorra on Saturday.

A laboured display against a minnow when sometimes even a resounding win is not enough, let alone an unconvincing victory.

England boss Tuchel has inherited some issues, created a few new ones and left many fans with a feeling of deja vu. Not ideal with the World Cup starting a year from Wednesday.

You can be sure that somewhere Gareth Southgate was wearing a wry smile.

This was familiar territory for England as they are on a hiding to nothing against the smaller nations in a procession of a qualifying group.

Steve McClaren even more so. Back in 2007, his side was booed at half-time when goalless against Andorra, but ended up winning 3-0 with the manager storming out of the press conference, shouting: “Write what you want.”

A sloppy and pedestrian England were goalless at half-time at Espanyol’s ground at the weekend - and jeered off again.

Once the tone is set in the first five minutes, the die is cast.
