Holiday tax could 'decimate' tourism trade, bosses warn
Scottish Daily Express
|March 24, 2026
HOSPITALITY bosses fear the “great British holiday” is under threat from a proposed tax that would hit visitors with £1.6billion in new charges and threaten 33,000 jobs.
The tourism economy could be “decimated” by the levy — frightening off domestic and international vacationers — bosses fear.
Industry body UKHospitality is urging the government to reverse course on its plan.
The tax would allow mayors in England to impose a charge on international and domestic visitors’ stays in hotels, holiday lets and B&Bs.
A consultation closed last month, with ministers claiming revenue from the tax could be used to invest in local infrastructure and regeneration.
