Flood alerts as heavy rains set to melt snow

THE risk from flooding, following the big freeze, has become Scotland’s biggest danger from the weather.

Mild air sweeping in from the Atlantic has replaced the Arctic chill that has gripped the country since the end of 2025, rapidly thawing ice and snow in a matter of hours.

Today double-digit temperatures will be felt in Scotland for the first time this year with 10C (50F) expected in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The Met Office’s Matthew Lehnert said: “Temperatures will rise and we'll see rain rather than snow accompanying strong, gusty winds in the north.

“Warnings have been issued for heavy and persistent rain, as well as these strong winds overnight in western and northern Scotland.
