Driver humbled by grieving family's support spared jail

A MAN “humbled” by the kindness shown by grieving relatives of a pal whose death he caused by careless driving has avoided jail.

Malcolm Murchison, 70, told Donald Martin’s family his actions on May 5, 2022, on the A87 near Portree in Skye, were to blame.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard Murchison was driving a van with an excessive and unsecured load that caused a trailer to break free on to the other lane.

It collided with a car driven by Mr Martin, 65, a shinty veteran and a pal of the accused for “many decades”.

Mr Martin died at the scene and Murchison had to break the news of the tragedy to his family. Yesterday, Murchison, who had admitted causing death by careless driving, appeared for sentencing.
