Over the past week, the US president has taken almost every opportunity available to make jabs at Washington’s European allies, with “no Winston Churchill” Sir Keir Starmer the biggest punching bag of all. The unpredictable Trump has been left seething as partners resisted his calls to send warships to help secure the Strait of Hormuz.

It is crystal clear other nations, including the UK, do not want to get dragged into the Iran conflict, especially while the president faces growing criticism of the action which many continue to see as a war of choice, not necessity.
