Constance hits back at soft justice claims

THE SNP's Justice Secretary has hit back at claims of "soft-touch justice" after the tragic knife deaths of three teenagers.

Angela Constance chaired a meeting in Edinburgh yesterday with charities and third-sector groups seeking to curb the growing danger of youth violence.

It comes amid concerns being raised by parents and politicians about the safety of children while they are out in public. The number of serious assaults committed by teenagers has risen by 600% in the past five years. Critics claim that there are scant deterrents.

A recent crime and justice survey by the Scottish Government revealed that the proportion of violent crime offenders aged under 16 was 31%, the highest level recorded. John Swinney agreed to convene another youth violence summit following the death of Kayden Moy, 16, allegedly stabbed to death on Irvine beach last month.
