CHARDONNAY, chenin blanc and sauvignon blanc, three giants of white grapes, are responsible for some of the world's most popular wines.

- by Matt Nixson

Known for their diverse range of styles and flavours, and their adaptability (it's no coincidence they flourish in the New World as confidently as in their traditional European heartlands), only riesling can compete in terms of global popularity.

Light, crisp whites will never go out of fashion and, if anything, are becoming even more popular among drinkers thanks to their versatility when it comes to pairing with food and ability to be enjoyed in all seasons.

Couple this with the fact that, in many parts of the wine world, rising temperatures are making the cultivation of traditional red varieties more unpredictable; a warmer climate can lead to higher sugar content, meaning higher alcohol, less acidity and changing flavour profiles.
