'Brave and dashing' batsman The Judge dies suddenly at 62

FORMER England cricketer Robin Smith has died aged 62.

Nicknamed The Judge, he was one of the game’s most popular figures during his 1990s heyday.

He passed away “unexpectedly” on Monday, his family said.

Moustachioed Smith earned his nickname because of his long, wavy hair, which resembled a judge’s wig.

The star, who was still playing for Hampshire until shortly before his 40th birthday and made more than 640 appearances for the county, relocated to Australia but struggled with mental health issues and alcoholism.

He was hospitalised for several months last year. The cause of his death remains unknown.
