Cameron unlikely hero already for Martin after Clement deal
HIS two engine-room partners in Plzen were linked with big-money moves away from Rangers this summer — but Lyall Cameron might just be the club’s most valuable midfielder right now.
And after scoring a priceless goal in the Czech Republic on Tuesday night, the Scot is worth his weight in gold.
Cameron was terrific in both legs against Viktoria Plzen in their Champions League qualifying tie.
While Nico Raskin and Mohamed Diomande were being touted for eight-figure transfers during the summer window, the 22-year-old was sneaking into Ibrox from Dundee.
He wasn’t even Russell Martin’s signing. When Philippe Clement was Rangers manager, Cameron penned a pre-contract agreement in January. Training compensation has still to be settled, but it is not expected to cost Gers much more than £400,000.
And Martin should be thankful to his Belgian predecessor because Cameron is gradually proving to be a key member of his new-look squad.
His 60th-minute strike in Plzen came in a 2-1 defeat, but it arrived at a vital time, settling Gers nerves amid an onslaught from the Czech hosts, who were unable to overturn their 3-0 first-leg hammering at Ibrox.
The 22-year-old admits he’s felt the need to prove himself to a manager who might not have known too much about him when he pitched up in Govan — and he’s adamant he’s only just getting started.
