PM meets US President for crucial summit on trade deal with the UK
-
called the “oil capital of Europe”, prior to leaving the United States.
It came after President Trump last night announced a trade deal had been reached with Europe.
This followed lengthy talks yesterday afternoon with the EU Commissioner, Ursula von der Leyen at Turnberry. Confirming the agreement, the President said: “We have reached a deal. It’s a good deal for everybody.
“It’s going to bring us closer together.
“It’s a partnership in a sense.”
Mr Trump continued: “This is the biggest deal. People don’t realise. This is bigger than other deal. We have great countries, great countries,
“I’m familiar with many of them, so are you and this is really the biggest deal.”
Ms von der Leyen also hailed the news as a “huge deal”, which came after “tough negotiations”. The agreement will see US tariffs on goods from Europe of 15% across the board after the White House had previously threatened a 30% rate.
It also includes promises of billions of dollars-worth of investment and energy purchases from Brussels. Speaking on Friday, she said the two had enjoyed a “good call” with Mr Trump and had agreed to meet in Scotland to discuss “trans-Atlantic trade relations and how we can keep them strong”.
The President had earlier been quoted as saying the EU wanted to “make a deal very badly” and claimed the chances of a deal were “50/50”.
