Judge Gavai to hear Waqf Act as CJI bows out of case

The Supreme Court of India has announced that it will take up pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act on 15 May, following the retirement of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna on 13 May.
The case will be presided over by Chief Justice of India-designate, Justice BR Gavai.
During a recent hearing, Chief Justice Khanna noted the need for clarification on several aspects raised by the Centre regarding the registration of Waqf properties.
