Liberation at the Royal Exchange Theatre

- REVIEW BY STEVE COOKE

Vision of united Africa takes shape in Chorlton-on-Medlock

LIBERATION, a new commission by the Royal Exchange, is one of the main theatrical offerings of this year’s Manchester International Festival.

The plot follows activists who spoke at the fifth Pan-African Congress, held at Chorlton-on-Medlock Town Hall in October, 1945.

The veteran wing is made up of Trinidad-born Pan-Africanist George Padmore (Eamonn Walker); his second wife London-born anti-racism campaigner Dorothy Pizer (Nicola Stephenson) welcome to Manchester co-organisers, Jomo Kenyatta (Tonderai Munyevu), who would go on to become president of Kenya, and Jamaican activist Amy Ashwood-Garvey (Pamela Nomvete).
