And what we can do about it
-
Picture this: You're scrolling through Instagram at 11 PM when a targeted ad pops up for those sneakers you've been eyeing. "24-hour flash sale! 50% off!" Before you know it, you've clicked “buy now" and added another purchase to your growing pile of impulse buys. Sounds familiar?
If you're a young adult, you're not alone. Recent research from Department of Psychology, School of Sciences, JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), Bengaluru reveals a troubling pattern: the weaker our self-control, the more likely we are to make impulsive purchases we later regret. While this might seem obvious, the implications run deeper than a few extra items in our shopping carts.
The Digital Temptation Trap
Today's young consumers face unprecedented challenges. Social media advertising has weaponized our psychology, delivering perfectly timed, personalized temptations directly to our phones. Flash sales create artificial urgency. One-click purchasing removes the natural pause that might help us reconsider. We're living in what researchers call a "temptation-rich environment" — and our self-control muscles are being stretched to their limits.
The study of 110 young adults aged 18-35 found that those with higher self-control were significantly less likely to make impulsive purchases. While the relationship was modest - self control explained about 4% of impulse buying behavior - it represents something crucial: our ability to regulate our emotions and resist immediate gratification directly impacts our financial decisions.
