The Other Factor in Indian Gender Discourse

Continued from yesterday... Mental experiences determine how identity manifests although they do not establish its original source.

Developmental psychology identifies family and peer input on self-awareness development yet self-identification boards between ages 15 and 50 reflects these endorsements rather than any generation process. Back in the 1920s Freud posited homosexuality emerged through psychological processes yet this theory became obsolete when the APA declassified this condition in 1973 due to its biological foundations. "Choice" lacks evidence-APA, WHO, and the Indian Psychiatric Society (which condemned conversion therapy in 2022) affirm intrinsic roots.

The prohibition of conversion therapy which exists in progressive countries (Canada as an example in 2021) has received negative reviews from experts who found that the approaches cause more damage than benefits according to a 2009 APA task force report. India imposes social stigma that drives people toward heterosexual marriages under parental duress though it fails to change their basic identity. Evolutionary studies provide understanding through their theories of queer kin helping family survival and natural universal characteristics comparable to left-handedness in populations which affects 10% of the population. Pre-colonial India manifested open acceptance of hijras in courts as well as frank sexual exploration in Kama Sutra traditions but colonial powers brought about repression that proved which components of culture became visible yet left no impact on actual existence.
