When Durban danced: memories of a bygone social scene
Post

TIME and time again, the POST esteemed correspondent, Yogin Devan, unearths a rare nugget which is a catalyst for deep conversations doused with melancholy and spreading of reminisce.
“Durban's bygone streets — a tapestry of craft and connection”, the POST, November 26 — 29, was no different.
Hats off to Devan for an achingly beautiful evocation filled with maudlin and misty-eyed sentiments.
Allow me the privilege to add to the memories.
The Saturday Night Fever and Grease genre defined the ’70s disco era with bubblegum, Brylcream and leather jackets.
Just when boyish John Travolta thought he had the swagger and swing sewn, out popped Michael Jackson with his ectoplasmic and electric dance moves that changed the soul of pop-rock forever.
Back then, we had matinee discos from 1pm to Spm in Durban, with outfits like Tango, in Lorne Street, Dallas, in Commercial Road, Module 99 in Good Hope Centre and Kilimanjaro at Himmies.
