CORRUPTION has again raised its head at city hall. Municipal leadership should set the tone and drive good governance, organisational integrity and anti-corruption initiatives.

However, corruption has become a significant challenge in eThekwini Municipality’s governance, directly undermining the ability to deliver services, with public interests often sidelined by self-serving officials

A Special Investigation Unit (SIU) report detailing irregularities in the management of eThekwini Municipality’s Housing Infill Programmes (IHP) has sent shockwaves through Phoenix, revealing mismanagement in the disposal of municipal land intended for affordable housing.

The SIU, tasked with exploring allegations of maladministration in the sale and purchase of 29 sites - including community parks and sports grounds — reported that the municipality failed to adhere to necessary legal and constitutional provisions in the transfer and sale of these properties.
