Dr Lokesh Ramnath Maharajh, Chairperson of the Priest's Council of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha, said the organisation extended its heartfelt condolences to the Roman Catholic Church and the global Christian community.

“As the first Latin American pope and a spiritual leader of extraordinary humility, compassion, and wisdom, Pope Francis served as a beacon of hope during a time marked by division and uncertainty. His unwavering commitment to the poor, the marginalised, and the environment showcased a deep moral courage and a profound dedication to the sacredness of all life.

“He will be remembered not only as a reformer within the church but also as a global voice for interfaith understanding, social justice, and human dignity. His open-hearted engagement with people of all faiths resonated with the Hindu values of unity in diversity, mutual respect, and the pursuit of peace."

Maharajh said the Sabha honoured Pope Francis' legacy.

“We pray for his soul to rest in eternal peace. May his life continue to inspire acts of kindness, reconciliation, and spiritual renewal across the world."

Dr Faisal Suliman, from the South African Muslim Network (Samnet), said Pope Francis showed humility and understanding of the challenges facing the developing world.
