The power utility enjoyed an unmanaged monopoly in electricity generation. As the Republics and economy grew, Eskom expanded until it became the biggest power utility on the continent.

It generates 95% of South Africa's electricity needs.

It never had any competition until the advent of power utility choice with inefficiencies, mismanagement and corruption that bailsouts from the government.
