Deaf Awareness Month raises awareness about rights

September marks International Deaf Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the rights and lived experiences of the deaf community.
The observance honours the first World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf, held in September 1951, and is supported locally by organisations such as the Deaf Federation of South Africa (DeafSA) and the South African National Deaf Association (Sanda). International Sign Language Day, celebrated annually on 23 September, emphasises the need to protect and promote the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of deaf people.
