'Stylish polish' to Scottish Ensemble
Perthshire Advertiser
|June 24, 2025
It was by Scottish Ensemble's arranged coach out to the fine surroundings of the Rossie Byre for their Concert for a Summer's Night, an imaginative programme of novel and great, all given with stylish polish.
Mixing the new with the newly arranged, we began with Antanas Rekašius' Movement 1 - an impressively sonorous start alternating with mockingly mad interruptions.
A new facet was Héloïse Werner as vocalist, composer and arranger joining the Ensemble.
Firstly with 18th century lutenist Julie Pinel’s Dark Places and Cantatille (a short cantata).
It began with double-bass rumbling and a scratchy violin from the Ensemble's Artistic Director Jonathan Morton.
Held notes and the voice heralded a repeat. The second part had a hazy background and a swaying bass tune.
