I’m two months pregnant and have recently split up with my husband.

I've had to leave our home because I wasn’t on the deed, and I don't feel able to work due to constant sickness. My employer says I haven’t worked long enough to get sick pay or maternity pay. I also have a three-year-old from a previous relationship, and her father doesn’t provide any financial support. What help can I get?

If you and your husband decide to get a divorce, you should receive legal advice on your rights to a share of the marital property. Even without being on the deeds, it is likely you will be entitled to a share.

We would also recommend you make an appointment for a benefit check. You may be entitled to a range of financial support including Universal Credit, though the first payment usually takes five weeks. You can request an advance payment but be aware it’s a loan and will be deducted from future payments.

If you’re not already receiving child benefit for your three-year-old, apply right away.
