I think most of us respect and acknowledge the importance of democracy.

Democracy taken for granted

Leaked memo Prime Minister Keir Starmer was challenged last week

We have the ability to have an input in how we are governed and determine the route that our country takes.

Many people don't even think about it - take it for granted, it is the way things are, the way things have always been for them, the norm.

Well, that has not always been the case. In fact, it is not the case in many countries across the world.

We know the old stories of the 1930s with the rise of fascism across Europe and elsewhere, even in the UK, with the rise of the Blackshirts and Mosley, the former member of Ramsay MacDonald's Labour government.

Yes, even on these isles, the rise of such parties has occurred and they have been given their marching orders out the door.
