Benefit changes can be complex

I was on Tax Credits for many years as I am a single parent and have not been able to earn enough to support myself and my children.

Earlier this year, I was moved to universal credit (UC) - which was very stressful and difficult to cope with financially-especially as my work coach says I need to work more than the 16 hours I needed to qualify for tax credits. I can't work more than this as I need to help out with my grandchild, who has additional needs, and also help my mum out as she is becoming more frail. I am now very worried of more changes to my benefits as my youngest child has just finished school.

I do not know how I will manage without the extra money I get for him, as he will still be living with me.

How much your UC payments will change following your youngest child leaving school will depend on what he plans to do next, and what age he is.

If he is under the age of 19 and planning to continue with non-advanced education, he may still be included in your claim as a “qualifying young person”.
