An ODF Plus Model village is one that sustains its ODF status, manages both solid and liquid waste, ensures visual cleanliness, and actively promotes sanitation awareness

India’s path to achieving the milestone of having 77% of its villages designated as ODF (Open Defecation-Free) Plus Model has been shaped not just by policies, but by quiet, community-led innovations. From bartering plastic waste for meals to leveraging tourism revenues, rural India is finding creative, localized ways to address sanitation challenges.
An ODF Plus Model village is one that sustains its ODF status, manages both solid and liquid waste, ensures visual cleanliness, and actively promotes sanitation awareness. As per official data, over 5.10 lakh villages have solid waste management systems, and more than 5.26 lakh manage liquid waste. Additionally, over 1,200 biogas plants are registered, and 6.38 lakh vehicles are deployed for waste collection.
However, real progress lies beyond these numbers in the stories of people taking ownership at the grassroots.
