Pact inked to conserve Mahanadi Mahaseer fish

Odisha government Friday signed a pact with the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) for independent research on the conservation, protection and increased production of the state fish ‘Mahanadi Mahaseer’.
‘The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in presence of Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (F&ARD) Minister Gokulananda Mallik, during the state-level celebrations of World Fisheries Day at OUAT Agriculture Education Hall here Friday.
On this occasion, subsidies were provided to 10 beneficiaries for projects implemented through various schemes. TEDs were distributed for turtle protection. The minister also flagged off an awareness vehicle to promote public awareness.
F&ARD Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar Vashistha said, ‘The state will provide ₹5 crore to CIFA over the next five years to carry out research on the fish species.”
