From bent for 20 years to a straight life

AIIMS-Bhubaneswar Thursday celebrated a remarkable medical breakthrough by its Orthopaedics department.

A 37-year-old Kendrapara resident, Biswa Bhushan Rout, who had battled Ankylosing Spondylitis for nearly two decades, has received a new lease of life after undergoing three complex orthopaedic surgeries.

Rout’s condition had resulted in complete fusion of his spine and both hips, creating a severe, rigid deformity that left his trunk bent and immobile from neck to hips. His spine and thighs formed an extreme 150-degree angle, with his chin nearly touching his thighs. The deformity crippled his daily life, making even basic activities such as walking, sitting, and sleeping extremely difficult.
