Two Notts Labour MPs are among benefit cuts rebels

TWO Nottinghamshire MPs are part of a growing Labour rebellion against widespread benefit cuts.

More than 120 Labour MPs have joined forces to try and block their government's plans to slash Universal Credit and make it harder to get PIP.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer insists he will press ahead with the plans, arguing that the current welfare system “traps people” on benefits.

But more than half of Labour backbenchers have signed an amendment which would block his plans.

Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome and Rushcliffe MP James Naish have both signed the amendment.

Ms Whittome signalled her opposition to the plans months earlier, saying there was “no justification” for them.

She and Mr Naish are set to formally vote for the amendment on Tuesday, July 1.
