Safeguarding checks could be tightened

GEDLING Borough Council is considering compulsory enhanced checks for councillors to protect children and vulnerable adults.
The Labour-run authority's standards committee met last week to discuss the issue.
A working group, established in March, recommended that all councillors undergo basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks - not enhanced checks because councillors do not carry out “regulated activities” that would require enhanced checks.
