PC jumped into Trent to save life of suspect he was chasing

A POLICE officer dived into the Trent to save the life of a man who jumped in moments before - despite not being able to swim.

PC John Chappell was out on patrol in Newark on Thursday when he recognised a 37-year-old man, an alleged suspect.

PC Chappell got out of his vehicle and began to chase the man, who then headed down a canal path by the Trent at about 4.40pm.

After losing sight of the man, the police officer was quickly told by another officer that someone had been spotted jumping into the river.

It was soon discovered to be the man he was chasing.
