WITNESS SAW HIM 'TEARING DOWN THE ROAD'

- By OLIVER PRIDMORE oliver.pridmore@reachplc.com

A YOUNG driver who left two people with multiple fractures when his car careered into theirs at over twice the speed limit has been jailed for two and a half years.

Nottingham Crown Court heard how a witness described Gilbert Fillingham's car "tearing down the road like his foot was on the floor" moments before his Honda Accord collided with a Dacia turning into a junction.

One of the passengers of that car, which contained four people on their way home to their residential care home from a disco at a local miners' welfare club, suffered a fractured spine and "a deformed leg" from the force of the impact.

A second victim, also a passenger, was left in a coma having received internal injuries, a broken breastbone, five broken ribs and a fractured spine due to the 24-year-old defendant's criminal actions.
