THE UK's oldest man got to meet the country’s youngest mayor as the 110-year-old was awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Erewash for his bravery in the Second World War.
Councillor Harry Atkinson, 25 - who took over as civic leader in May just a week after this year’s VE Day celebrations - presented D-Day hero Donald Rose with a framed scroll at Ilkeston’s Canal Vue Care Home.
Harry told the old soldier he was being honoured as a symbol of the country’s entire wartime generation.
