First shop to open in new-look row rapped for 'brash' approach

The Grade II listed Victorian shopfronts in Wheeler Gate had original historic features reinstated including new timberwork, large windows, and recessed entrances with decorative tiling.

Nottingham City Council said the work was designed to “bring a distinctive and smart, unified look to the large row of shops and units.”

But Nottingham Civic Society is disappointed at the “brash” approach of the new arrival - Nalla's Convenience Store, where the front window has been covered by film advertising its wares, such as drinks, sandwiches, ice cream, vapes, ready meals and toiletries.

Hilary Silvester, the organisation's vice president, said: "The latest scheme has restored the integrity of the building with pleasing, matching appropriate styles.

"What a pity, then, that the shape of the shopfront has been compromised with this large and rather bright notice.

"We appreciate that shops have to attract passers-by, especially in today's very difficult retail climate, but surely it doesn't have to be as brash as this?
