BARNSTAPLE railway station is poised for a fresh burst of colour and character, as a £2,500 grant from Great Western Railway (GWR) helps fund a series of improvements including new planters, a unique bug house and historical information boards.

Station's friends group win funds to enhance site

The funding was secured through GWR’s Customer and Community Improvement Fund, which launched in January to support grassroots projects that enhance public spaces and benefit local communities.

The initiative is being led by Friends Of Barnstaple Railway Station, a volunteer group dedicated to improving the station environment.

Their latest project will involve collaboration with a local men’s shed group, which will build railway wagon-style planters and a bespoke bug house inspired by a traditional signal box.
