Since SDTT has only seven trustees, it means only one can be permanent.

The Maharashtra Public Trusts (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, issued on 30 August, had said this change was being done because the lack of clarity on permanent trustees and tenure trustees had led to multiple litigations.

“This affects the working of the trusts, welfare of beneficiaries and the public,” it said. The ordinance took effect on 1 September.

On 17 October last year, SDTT and SRTT had decided to make all trustees permanent when their tenures expired. Chair Noel Tata was appointed a permanent trustee for life in January, while Srinivasan was appointed a permanent trustee in October. Mehli Mistry was removed as a trustee last month.
