'I respect all religions': CJI breaks silence after outrage over Lord Vishnu idol remarks

Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai on Thursday reiterated his respect for “all religions” while responding to criticism over remarks he made during the hearing of a plea concerning the reconstruction of a Lord Vishnu idol in Madhya Pradesh.

“Someone told me the other day that the comments made have been portrayed in social media... I respect all religions," the CJI said in court, addressing the online backlash.

The issue dates back to May 16, when a bench led by the CJI along with Justice K Vinod Chandran dismissed a petition seeking the reconstruction and reinstallation of a seven-foot idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari Temple, part of the UNESCO-listed Khajuraho complex in Chhatarpur district..
