A fire at a pharmaceutical unit in Anakapalli district on Wednesday claimed 17 lives and left 41 others injured. The situation could have been much worse had it not been for the lunch break, which meant fewer workers were present in the plant when the fire broke out.
The incident took place at the Escientia Advanced Science Pvt Ltd facility in the SEZ at Atchutapuram around 2:15 pm. The company, which began producing intermediate chemicals and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) in April 2019 with an investment of Rs 200 crore, saw its operations ravaged by the fire.
