The election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Bishop of Rome has taken many by surprise.
The first American pope, he was not even among the frontrunners in the conclave. Yet, perhaps in this moment of global uncertainty and profound upheaval, the College of Cardinals saw in him the kind of shepherd the Church and the world desperately need.
As a cardinal, Prevost, who has taken the papal name of Pope Leo XIV, stood out for his dedication to dialogue, reconciliation, and service to the marginalized. As a person, he is known for his simplicity, gentleness, and deep spiritual grounding. These are the very qualities that the world hungers for in a time of great division, when leadership too often becomes synonymous with power rather than service.
