A sower went out to sow

In the Gospel parable, Jesus communicates to us the very nature of God. God is lavish and generous and does not scrimp on giving us his graces and blessings. He gives us all the chances we can get. He does not get tired nor gives up in saving us. He always finds a way to search for us.

The parable also shows us the different dispositions of the human heart. The sower casts seeds on the footpath, on rocky ground, on thorny soil, and on good ground or rich soil. Human wisdom dictates that we should conserve or economize on the seeds that we cast away.

Farmers know how to concentrate their sowing on rich or fertile grounds so as to ensure maximum yield. In terms of saving mankind, Jesus does not scrimp on seeds but is indeed a risk taker. He generously casts seeds all over the place in the sincere hope that despite the birds of the air, the rocks and thorns, new life can begin somehow. He does not focus solely on people who have a promising future, but reaches out especially to the wayward and the lost.

In God’s infinite wisdom, he knows that his word has great innate power to transform any person, situation, or experience from dull and challenging realities toward a renewed life.
