£7.9m refit to close station for nine days

NEARLY all of Manchester Piccadilly train station is set to close for nine days from this weekend as part of a 'major overhaul' project.

Twelve platforms at Manchester Piccadilly station will be out of action for nine days

The project, which aims to improve journeys for passengers as well as for freight, will take place from Saturday until Sunday, February 22.

During this time, Network Rail plans to replace 11 sets of points, renew 9,000 metres of cabling, upgrade timber sleepers with modern concrete equivalents and bring lineside equipment up to date across six different lines.

Because of this essential work, it means large parts of the station will be shut for those nine days, but plans are in place for people who need to travel during this time.
