City's historic gems have much to be modest about

YOU wouldn't necessarily call Manchester a pretty city.

But from the neo-gothic splendour of the town hall to the industrial might of the Castlefield Viaduct, the city certainly has some magnificient buildings and monuments.

There are 865 listed stuctures in Manchester, defined as being of 'special architectural, historical or cultural significance.

Of those, 15 have the highest Grade I status - buildings of outstanding architectural or historic interest.

But while you might expect somewhere as grand as John Rylands Library to be protected, there are plenty of other more modest wonders also deemed worthy of preservation.

Here, we run through some of the unusual and unexpected I things to have been granted listed status in Manchester.
