THE cost of driving through the Mersey Tunnels is set to rise again next year, as new price plans are revealed.

- by LIAM THORP

The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority is proposing an increase in the price of the tolls that motorists have to pay to make their way through the Kingsway and Queensway tunnels that connect Liverpool and Wirral underneath the River Mersey.

If the plans are approved, then a rise in the cost of a single journey for a class 1 vehicle - which includes most cars - will rise from £2.30 to £2.40. For Liverpool City Region residents with a T-FLOW account, the discounted tunnel fare would increase by 10p, from £1.50 to £1.60.

The non-city region resident T-FLOW toll would also increase by 10p to £2.40.

The CA points out that the change will mean city region residents who account for 51 per cent of journeys - would pay over £1 less than the maximum amount authorised under the Tunnels Act, which is expected to stand at £2.90.
